  • New weather app joins our expanded set of enhanced mobile products, attracting millions more mobile users in first quarter of 2013

Sunglasses or umbrella? Millions of consumers make a daily habit of turning to Yahoo! for answers to their weather questions before walking out the front door each morning. Last week, we launched an inspiring and entertaining way for them to get their daily forecasts with our weather app for mobile.

Combining up-to-the-minute weather data with stunning Flickr photos from around the globe, the app delivers an informative and immersive experience for users. Instead of just the usual straightforward report of daily highs and lows, our new app turns checking the weather into a journey through different geographies, showcasing sunsets, landmarks, and picturesque locales. Expanded details such as precipitation, wind and pressure, and a radar map are just a tap and scroll away.

  • “Hybrid Hunter” driving game builds on VW’s theme that this is the “first hybrid you’ll actually want to drive”

Hybrid vehicles are typically long on ecological benefits and short on driving fun. VW tackles that notion head-on with a custom expandable ad on Yahoo.com that features an addictive video game that keeps you glued to their page and soaking up their message that the new Turbo Jetta Hybrid is a blast to drive.

The ad’s “Hybrid Hunter” game is based on the ‘80s arcade hit “Spy Hunter” and features the same vertical scrolling format. You play the game right on the page, using your arrow keys to steer your Turbo Jetta Hybrid past slower traffic, pick up extra points, and generally have a good time. The game takes a cue from the recent Jetta commercial “Passing Lane.”

It’s not all fun and games in this dual user-initiated expandable ad. There’s also plenty of information on the hybrid’s engine, batteries, aerodynamics. There’s even a story about the modified version that set a land speed record for hybrids at the famed Bonneville Salt Flats.

  • Advertising is a business that’s powered by ideas. Even ones like these.

The light bulb is the go-to graphic symbol for a bright idea, born when Thomas Edison invented the first commercially practical light bulb in 1879, a very good idea indeed.

Advertising is a business of ideas, says our David T. Jones, and they come in all types—big, small, good, bad, and funny. In this week’s Ad Land cartoon, he draws up a dozen of the funny kind, each with their own special light bulb.

And while we’re on funny light bulbs, David sent along one of his favorite ad jokes.

Q: How many Art Directors does it take to change a light bulb?

A: Does it have to be a light bulb?

Here’s a bright idea. Check out the full cartoon after the jump.

Editor’s note: “Mobile Matters” is our ongoing series where we look at top issues, challenges, and opportunities in the fast-moving world of mobile marketing. We recently shared findings from a major tablet study by VivaKI that revealed the three most effective ad formats for the device. Here we highlight the study’s insights into the online habits of tablet users, which marketers can use to connect with them.

There are 70 million tablet users in the U.S, according to a recent study by VivaKI, and they spend an average of 90 minutes a day on their devices. The rapid growth of tablet users has triggered a “seismic shift” in consumer behavior that marketers should understand and leverage, says the study, and it shares insights into their daily activities on their devices.

The 14-month study collected data from 26 companies (including Yahoo!) and 20 million consumers, or one-third of the total tablet market in the U.S. Here are some highlights on tablet usage from the study.

  • Maria St. Martin of OMD picks the best bracket out of 1,700 entries. Melissa Gerber of iProspect channels her Hurricanes’ school spirit for the winning photo.

Our Agency Pick ‘Em and Flickr hoops photo contests for ad agencies were all about the men’s national collegiate basketball championship, but two women claimed the top prizes. Maria St. Martin, an Maria St. Martin of OMD, Agency Pick 'Em winneradvertising strategist with OMD, picked the best bracket out of 1,700 entries in Agency Pick ‘Em, winning a trip for two to the 2014 Men’s College Basketball Championship Final game. Keith Zukowsky of MEC took second place, giving men a boost and receiving a 55-inch Sony Bravia Yahoo! Connected TV.

Melissa Gerber of iProspect won the Agency Pick ‘Em Flickr photo contest with a tribute to her University of Miami Hurricanes, winning a top-of-the-line Canon EOS Rebel T3i DSLR camera. Here's a look at how Maria and Melissa won their contests.

Maria St. Martin: “It’s fun when a female wins a bracket.”

You could say picking brackets for the college basketball championship tournament is in Maria St. Martin’s DNA. “I’ve done brackets since I was a little kid,” she says. “My father and older brother always did them, so I did them too.”

Thanks to the Internet, she’s been known to play 10 pools at a time, but this year she throttled back to four. A strategist by trade and temperament, Maria took a different approach with Agency Pick ‘Em because she didn’t think she had a chance to win with over 1,700 entries in the pool. “I went out of my strategy zone and just had fun with it,” she said. “I picked Michigan to make the finals because lots of family members went there. And I had to pick (eventual champ) Louisville for the finals, since they’d been predicted to win it all season long.”
